The
Minister of The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr. Audu
Ogbeh has flagged off the Nigeria Yam Export.
The Honourable minister said Nigeria needs to begin earning more foreign
exchange by exporting agricultural products and Yam is a good way to start.
Nigerian
as we know, even in the midst of this alarming hunger, is one nation that waste
over 20% of the food produced and exportation is one ways we can prevent food
wastage, as we are yet to develop adequate capacity to preserve our food.
“There
is really no shortage, new yams will be here in two weeks. The old stock
is still there everywhere and people in the market are getting worried that new
yams will come and nobody will touch the old ones."
“We
actually over produce food here (in Nigeria), 30% to 40% of some of the food we
produce is wasted because of poor preservation capacity but this will not cause
any hardship,” he assured Nigerians.
